History of Coach Gate Condominiums

The Coach Gate Condominium Association acreage was annexed to the City of Windy Hills in 1969.  At the time the property was annexed, it was a beautiful area of trees and dense vegetation.  For many years, a fruit stand existed on Coach Gate acreage that faced Hubbards Lane.  When the Planning Commission became convinced that the fruit being sold at the fruit stand was not raised on the premises (which at that time was a zoning requirement) it ordered that the fruit stand be closed.

Jefferson County Department of Public Works used a large portion of the property for staging, winter storage of salt, and road debris including brush and limbs. Parts of the property eventually became a dumping site for construction debris. Unhappy with the property use, Windy Hills filed a complaint with the Fiscal Court and sent photos of the site to the press.  The County was forced to clear the site of all debris and were soon mandated to use the site as temporary storage only.

Over the next few years the City of Windy Hills kept a close eye on the property, wanting to preserve it as an area in which to take great pride.  Eventually the property was purchased by R. W. “Buck” Marshall who presented a plan for 1700 plus apartments in the area which Coach Gate occupies today.  That proposal did not meet the vision the Windy Hills community had in mind for the property and the proposal was not approved.

Eventually, the property was purchased by Notice Colston, a Louisville builder and developer.  The City of Windy Hills negotiated a development plan with Mr. Colston that called for a condominium community. This development plan also included a variety of buildings and owner-occupied dwellings that varied in size, square footage and floor plans. Building began in 1976.

Coach House is a large 3 story building with 68 units next to Coach Gate that was built in the mid 1970’s.  A stocked lake, mature trees and lush greenery add to the ambiance of this desirable community.
